American History X (1998)

Director: Tony Kaye

Stars: Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Lien, Ethan Suplee, Fairuza Balk, Avery Brooks, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach

Derek Vineyard is paroled after serving 3 years in prison for brutally killing two black men who tried to break into and steal his truck. Through his brother, Danny Vineyard's narration, we learn that before going to prison, Derek was a skinhead and the leader of a violent white supremacist gang that committed acts of racial crime throughout L.A. and his actions greatly influenced Danny. Reformed and fresh out of prison, Derek severs contact with the gang and becomes determined to keep Danny from going down the same violent path as he did.

This is one of the best movies to come out of the 90's. This movie was an independent film that had a well known talented cast. I remember when this movie came out, and how bad I wanted to see it. It was only released in select cities. That means, no small town theaters are going to get it.

This movie was a bit ignored when it came out by the public and the academy awards. Like I said, the run for this movie was limited, so most people did not know about it. Since this movie was considered an independent movie at the time, the academy was not paying much attention to those movies. Which was really a shame, since this movie could have been so much larger than it was. It is a great movie with a frank and fearful topic.

This movie is about the leader of a skinhead group that has been serving time in jail for two counts of manslaughter. His family is falling apart, and his little brother is wanting to follow in his brothers skinhead ways. I mean nothing is going right at all with this family. They are all doing their best to hang on to what they have and each other. The odds are stacked against them.

The cast for the movie was wonderful. The performances were great all through the movie. Edward Norton was nominated for Best Actor by the Academy. He deserved to win. This was one of his best roles. I will not go into too much detail on the actors in this movie. They were all incredible.

The other greatness of this movie is the direction and the camera work. There some beautiful shots in this movie. There are some scenes that are wonderfully caught on camera. It looks to be shot almost by mistake, they are so perfect.

I know this movie is hard to watch at times, but it is so well worth watching and even owning a copy for yourself. I see nothing wrong with this movie at all. It is a subject that we need to know about. If you have never seen this movie, then you need to find a way to watch it now. You will not be sorry. Enjoy.
