This is the tender, heartbreaking story of a young man's struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality.
First of all, this is the first black and gay movie to win the Oscar for Best Picture. The sad part is at the award ceremony, this was never said. This was a major move for gay and black movies. These two movie genres are no longer being ignored, for now.
The story for this movie is very simple. There is not a complex part to the story at all. It is a simple story of this little boy growing up and becoming a young man. The most important part of the movie is the amount of people that will be able to relate to this movie in some way. It is not a black movie or a gay movie. It is more a movie about love and survival. A person that grew up poor around a drug addict will be able to identify with the character. This character went through a lot. His mother was the most useless piece of flesh that lived. She needed to be beaten for the way she acted. There is no way a child should be neglected by a parent. I would have whipped her ass.
The way this movie was constructed was somewhat like other movies, but for this movie, there were three different chapters that told the story using three different names and nicknames for the main character. With each chapter, the movie showed how the main character made it through to the next. His life was not easy, but there were people around him that loved him.
The cast for the movie I was not aware of except for two people. The rest I had not seen in anything that I could remember. Janelle Monáe was great in this movie. She was not in it that much, but her scenes made you remember the kindness and love that she showed in the movie. Naomie Harris is one that I had only seen in one other movie, but I liked her. I hated her in this movie, so she did her job well in this movie. You wanted to kick her ass. The rest of the cast was really good.
Do not look at this movie as only a gay or black movie. This is a really good movie. The trailer was decent, so I thought the movie would at least be watchable, but it was just more than that. I was really impressed with this movie. This is a movie is put on your list to watch. Enjoy.
