Ben Cash, his wife Leslie and their six children live deep in the wilderness of Washington state. Isolated from society, Ben and Leslie devote their existence to raising their kids educating them to think critically, training them to be physically fit and athletic, guiding them in the wild without technology and demonstrating the beauty of co-existing with nature. When Leslie dies suddenly, Ben must take his sheltered offspring into the outside world for the first time.
This movie takes a close look at a different ways of raising children. Ben Cash and his wife raised their children without the influence of outside society being able to give their children an alternative view on anything. The children received all of their knowledge from their parents and selected books. The children were brilliant, but they knew nothing of the outside world or how people and other children acted. This is the biggest downfall for the children. The father made sure his would end up children social outcast, and he made sure that they would have a harder life than other people simply because they will not fit into society in any way. He is responsible for his children.
This story is how many families raise their children now days, because they do not agree with the information that children are being taught in schools today. The sad part is that most of these home school children have a harder time being around other children their age that go to a regular school. The movie shows how this family lived and survived.
The cast for the movie was really good. Viggo Mortensen captured the passion of this man's beliefs and mentality. He completely became this man. He got the look and the act down. He even was nude in the movie. George MacKay was that creepy weird teenager that most people stayed away from because you just never knew if he was going to grow up and become a serial killer. He had most of the signs. These were the two stand out roles for me. The rest of the cast was great though.
This is a really good movie. It is another look at a family unit, and how it works in time of a crisis. This is not an action pack movie at all. It is nothing but a drama. This is not a movie for the whole family. There are too many adult conversations and nudity for children to watch. The title of the movie is a bit misleading. this movie was well worth watching. Enjoy.
