Mary is a devout girl at a Christian high school, dating Dean. But her perfect world begins to fall apart when Dean reveals that he's gay. She receives a vision from Jesus and tries everything she can to help Dean, including offering her virginity. Unfortunately, Dean is sent to a treatment center to "cure" him, and Mary discovers she's pregnant. When her friends turn on her, she finds solace with school misfits Roland and Cassandra.
This was one of those movies that completely surprised me. The idea of this movie seemed like something a preteen girl would watch. I thought that was who the movie was made for. Many of my friends had seen this movie, and they got me to watch it. I will have to say that this is a really good movie that I think it should be shown in high schools.
I grew up knowing and around people like this. They are so religious that they are kindly hateful. There are more of these people around in churches than you could imagine. That part of the movie was pretty true. The extreme religious youth are the worst kids out there. There are just brainwashed by their parents and other church member at an early age, so they have no opinion of their own, because their parents and others would not allow it.
This movie showed both sides of the story from the view of the nice religious kids to the mean religious kids. You see how both of them feel about things in the movie. The story is not just one sided. The movie does show compassion for "sinners" in the movie. The story and script for the movie was really well done.
I think the cast was the most interesting part of the whole movie. Mandy Moore and Macaulay Culkin in a movie together. Who would have ever thought that this would happen? It worked though. Jena Malone has become a good actress in her own. Heather Matarazzo was the best. I love her, and I will watch almost anything that she is in. She is great.
This movie teaches us not to be around overly zealous religious young people, because it may seem like you are walking into a cult meeting. You have been warned. This is a great movie to watch more than once. This is a movie that you may want to add to your collection. It is well worth it. Watch with a mixed crowd. Enjoy.
