Scanners are men and women born with incredible telepathic and telekinetic powers. There are many who exercise the benefits of their special gifts in a safe and judicious manner. However, there is a group of renegade scanners who plan to create a race that will rule the world.
This is one of those movies that the first time that you watch it, you may not like it. That how it was for me. It took watching this movie a second time years later as an adult, to really appreciate this movie.
It is an interesting movie dealing with the fight of good versus evil. You have one set of scanners that are looking to make their lives better, then you have another that are looking to kill the others to become stronger. It is a very simple story, until you really get into the movie. You may find yourself getting really deep into the entire movie.
The best part of this movie and what it is known for is the special effects. The exploding head was one of the best effects from the 80's out of any movie. It is just something that you just do not except to happen at all, especially toward the beginning of a movie. The effects for the rest of the movie are almost just as great. It is worth watching the movie for, just to see the effects in the movie. They are just that great in the movie.
Michael Ironside is a great villain. He played that part several times in the early 80's, and he made those movies happen. He looks so normal, but there is just something about the way he looks that you just cannot trust him at all. You want to trust him, but his eyes almost tell you to run. He was great in this role. The rest of the cast was not bad at all.
This is a really good movie to watch. It is even worth owning a copy of your own. There is even a Criterion Collection on Blue-ray available. That right there is worth getting a copy. Enjoy.
