Strange Magic (2015)

Director: Gary Rydstrom

Stars: Evan Rachel Wood, Elijah Kelley, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Maya Rudolph, Peter Stormare, Tony Cox

Bog King leader of the Dark Forest, hates the notion of love and has ordered the destruction of all primroses, which are an essential ingredient of love potions. However, when he meets Marianne, a feisty fairy princess whose heart was broken by a philandering fiancé, he begins to change his mind. Meanwhile, an elf named Sunny makes his way to the Dark Forest to collect enough primrose petals for a potion of his own.

This is really an animated movie version of the play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Did we really need this made? Are they trying to get kids to love Shakespeare? Because that is something that kids would love to understand better is English literature. What were they thinking with this storyline.

The voice work on this movie was really good. The character's voices just blended in with the movie. No one really stood out too much. It worked out well. The animation for this movie was amazing. I know it was all done with computer software. Even the hair on all of the characters looked perfect. It looked as good as some video games intros. You know how incredible those look. This was almost the same experience.

Here is what I really hated about the movie, the music. They went completely unoriginal and used real music from the past few decades. You are sitting there any watching a family animated movie, and then you start to hear some song off the radio in the movie. These songs barely made any sense at all in the movie. It seems like they pick out the songs then they started to write sections of the story around the song. It was just really bad. To make matters worse, they start to do some song mash ups. I hate those the most. They are so bad and annoying. That is what really killed this movie for me. If the music would have been more original, then the movie could have been better.

I just did not like this movie. It was just mediocre at best. There will be some kids out there that may really like this, but I just was not impressed at all. I would say skip this one, but that is just my opinion. Enjoy it anyway.
