Red Riding Hood (2011)

Director: Catherine Hardwicke

Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Lukas Haas, Gary Oldman, Virginia Madsen, Shiloh Fernandez, Max Irons

Valerie is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter, but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry. Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon, to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon's arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves.

They made another movie from a well known children's story. This movie is not really for children though. It seems like the creators of this movie are trying to tap into adults childhood fears. They want to get at us that way, into our mind. Well, it almost worked.

The look of the movie is really well played and place. It looks like something out of a storybook. It looks great. The color palette used for the movie made that red cloak stand out so much in the movie that is worked. That bright red against all of those medium browns and neutral colors just shot right through the movie for every scene that it was shown in.

The cast was well played. There were some well known people in it and some that were newer. Virginia Madsen was good at playing the mother. The sad part is that is the main roles she can get now. I thought Lukas Haas had completely disappeared, so it was good to see him in a movie. His career did not take off like people thought it would. Amanda Seyfried as the lead was good, but those eyes are the one thing that sets her apart from other women. Those eyes are huge. She looks like an alien or something. Gary Oldman was not up to par for this movie. He is just getting worse with every movie. It seems that way, at least.

The movie was okay. It was not terrible, but it was not really good either. it was like watching children stories from hell or something like that. If you have not seen this movie, it is not that bad at all. Just do not expect a great horror movie. You would be disappointed. Enjoy.
