Gilbert's life, his future, is thwarted he knows this, but it is in this guardian angel that his love and bond for Arnie cannot, and will not, be let go. That is until the free spirit of Becky arrives in town, and with her grandmother are stranded for the week while waiting for parts for their vehicle.
This was still in the land of the independent movies of the 90's. I miss those years so much. This was one of those buried treasures of film that came out. It was not a big hit, but it has lived and been referenced for years afterward.
What is really eating him? He is trapped in a small town that has nothing to offer with no chance in site of ever getting out or life changing. He is trapped by his family. It takes all of them to take care of the house and their mother. It is one of the saddest situations to be in. You feel like you have no options in life, so you just feel hopeless. This is where the character is mentally and emotionally. You are making the best of a bad situation.
The cast for the movie was the best. This was when Johnny Depp was doing good indie and smaller movies, not the big budget crap that he does now. He was a better actor then. People that that something was really wrong with Leonardo DiCaprio when this movie came out. He was that good in the movie. Juliette Lewis was in her hay day then, hitting nothing but good movies.
This is one of my favorite movies. I have watched it so many times it is ridiculous. If for some reason you have not watched this movie, then you really need to watch it. It is a wonderful movie loaded with great one liners. Enjoy.
