Stella and Dotty are a lesbian couple from Maine who embark on a Thelma and Louise-style road trip to Nova Scotia to get married after Dotty is moved into a nursing home by her granddaughter. Along the way they pick up Prentice, a hitchhiker travelling home to Nova Scotia to visit his dying mother, and the three bond deeply as they travel.
This movie was a sleeper, and nothing else. This was a really good movie. There are complaints about the "language" that Olympia Dukakis uses in the movie. All I have to say about that is stop watching movies, if that is your biggest thing to complain about. That is not even something that even enters my mind when I watch something. No one needs that kind of negativity in their life.
The story to this movie is very simple, but it is a very real and important story to tell. Throughout history older gay couples have been split up by their own families. Simply because they do not understand their relationship or do not approve of it. This movie shows what these two women have to deal with and go through just to stay together.
Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker were wonderful in this movie. You could almost see them as a couple. They fought, kissed and loved each other. What more would you want from a sweet couple. The cast was small, but they did a good performance.
This is a sweet and a bit sad movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone. It is a hidden gem that mainly lesbians know about. Watch it. Enjoy.
