Stars: Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison, Jack Thompson
Sally is sent to live with her father Alex and his new girlfriend Kim. They have just purchased a historical home that they plan on remodeling them selling. The previous owner was a painter that went mad and disappeared. They discover a hidden door in the foyer that enters into the painter's studio. There is something else living in the house that only comes out at night in Sally's room.
The movie was a remake of a TV movie from 1973 by the same name. I have not seen the TV movie, but I heard it was better than this movie. I was not expecting a terrific movie, but at least something better than this one. The story had some potential. Guillermo del Toro was one of the writers for this movie, but that is a problem itself, since there was more than one writer for this movie. Too many ideas going into one piece of work.
The acting and the cast for the movie was good. Katie Holmes was so much better than I thought she would be. I figured all of that time locked up with Tom would have made her talent suffer. Jack Thompson is an unrated Aussie actor that is always good in his roles. He is solid. Bailee Madison was good for a child actor. That is not saying too much. The house with all of the rooms seemed like a character all in itself. With the characters entering into the belly of the house where all of the mystery and horror is located.
This was a watchable movie, but that is it. It is a bit boring at times, and the story is just very "Are you kidding me?!". That was a bit of a letdown. Enjoy or not.
