Rocky Dennis developed the disease craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, an extremely rare, sclerotic bone disorder. The condition usually results in neurological disorders and death during childhood. He is getting ready for his first year at a new high school. His mother, Rusty, is a no nonsense woman that does not put up with anyone. She hangs out with a motorcycle gang that thinks the world of her son Rocky. Rusty has a drug problem that she is trying to handle. This is the story of the end of Rocky's life.
The performances in this movie are top notch. Eric Stoltz was still building his career, but the make-up did not help the audience to recognize him at all. The performance was impressive for his age. Sam Elliott is always good at every role he takes, but in this movie he really seem to fit the part. I saw this movies as a kid and thought that is how most bikers look like. I was so wrong. And of course the star of the movie, Cher. She captured that role like no one else could. You really did believe that you were almost watching real footage. You believed in the characters.
The make-up work applied to Eric Stoltz for the role was really close to how Rocky Dennis looked like. It is a sad story of how he had to live, and how he was treated and looked at by other people. A mother should never have to experience something like this. The story is so sad, but it shows how he tried not to let his disease get him down. The people in his life loved him regardless.
Everything about this movie is pretty much great. I love this movie for the story and the performances. If you just got out from under a rock and have not watched this movie, then by all means go out and do so. You will not regret watching this movie. Enjoy.
