Female Trouble (1974)

Director: John Waters

Stars: Divine, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, Cookie Mueller, Susan Walsh

Dawn Davenport starts out a troubled rebellious high school student. She did not get what she wanted for Christmas, so she runs away from home, gets pregnant and settles down as a single mother with her daughter, Taffy. Dawn and her two friends from high school, Concetta and Chicklette, become cat buglers to make money. Dawn starts going to a new hair salon where she meets  Donald and Donna Dasher and her new stylist, Gator. Dawn invites Gator to move in with her. Gator's Aunt Ida begs for him to be gay and find a nice man to settle down with. The Dashers want to turn Dawn into a trashy celebrity art show for their own amusement. Dawn takes it all too far in the name of Art.

This is my favorite of John Waters' movies. It is trashy with a story and no class. The characters in this movie are unforgettable, to say the least. Dawn is the type of woman you would secretly want to be best friends with just so you could witness all the craziness that goes on. Concetta and Chicklette would make the best BFFs ever. Taffy was just too much with her playing. A child playing car wreck would just send them to therapy. Of course, Aunt Ida in her black lace-up cat suit stole the whole movie. The first time I saw that the image was burned into my brain. I just could not get enough. When she made the statement, "The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life!", nothing could be further from the truth. Donna Dasher is the best stuck-up weirdo that a person could hope for. I love all of the characters in this movie. It is also the last movie the original cast works together.

The costumes in this movie were over the top and wonderfully trashy. The sets looked like beautiful cutouts and paint cardboard. The music is great as always. This movie is not as popular as some of his others, but this one has the best dialogue out of any movie. The Christmas scene is the best period.

There is nothing wrong with this movie, except for the fact that it is not on blue-ray with tons of extras. That will probably never happen. I love this movie. I have shown it to so many different people, and most are shocked at first but like the movie any way. Enjoy.
